Oscars 2012: Red Dresses, who wore them?

Celebrities who wore red dresses to the 2012 Oscars

Every year there are a select few ladies that decide to don beautiful red dresses for the Oscars. Some pull it off quite well, others result in a massive #FAIL.  The challenge is to select a red tone that not only appropriately matches your skin tone, but also pairs up attractively with the actual red carpet.  You don't want to blend in.

This year, most of the celebrities looked beautiful.  Which is your favorite dress? Or who do you think wore red the best?

Michelle Williams wore a beautiful Louis Vuitton gown that took over 300 hours to create in the atelier in Paris. While on the red carpet, Michelle tells Ryan Seacrest that her dress is actually more of a coral color, however on the television and even in this image it gives off more of a reddish tone.  Regardless, it's beautiful and perfectly accessorized with a Bottega Venetta bag, a 30-carat Fred Leighton for Forevermark necklace, a 19th Century Fred Leighton diamond bow brooch, and Christian Louboutin shoes.

Michelle Williams was nominated for the Oscar for Best Performance by an Actress in a Leading Role for her role in "My Week with Marilyn".  The Oscar went to Meryl Streep for her role in "The Iron Lady".

Emma Stone, star of the Best Picture nominated film "The Help, wore a beautiful red   Giambattista Valli Haute Couture halter gown with a tie neck.  And, although it looked amazing on her, it was too reminiscent of one of Nicole Kidman's most iconic red carpet looks.  During the 2008 Oscars, Kidman wore one of the most memorable gowns ever worn, a gorgeous red halter dress with a side bow by Balenciaga.

See the similarity?

Emma Stone accessorizes with bracelet and earrings from the Louis Vuitton high jewelery collection, and a clutch embroidered with sequins. The bracelet, from the Pre-fall 2012 high jewellery collection, is a new interpretation of the Charm bracelet, the Maison’s iconic piece of jewellery created by Marc Jacobs in 2001.  The earrings in white gold set with red spinels and diamonds are part of L'Ame du Voyage high jewelery collection, whose latest chapter pays tribute to Paris.

Janet McTeer wore a  custom draped garnet stretch chiffon gown by David Meister Signature to the 84th Academy Awards.  In this image the dress does not look too clingy, however while walking the red carpet, the gown kept not only clinging in the wrong spot, but stretching in an awkward fashion--clearly the tailoring was the problem.

Janet McTeer was nominated for Best Performance by an Actress in a Supporting Role for her role in "Albert Nobbs", the Oscar went to Octavia Spencer.

Livia Giuggioli wore a custom red Valentino gown.  If you're going to wear the color red on the red carpet, might as well it be made by Valentino.  Her dress reminds me of something Emma from the book by Jane Austen would wear...in a more subdued tone, of course.

The Academy President Thomas Sherak and Madeline Sherak make quite the handsome couple.  Madeline wears a strapless gown that very well tailored to her body.  She wore minimal accessories which is the perfect call when wearing a bold colored dress on the red carpet.

Natalie Portman wore a polka-dot vintage Dior dress and Harry Winston diamonds to the 2012 Oscars.  This dress really had to grow on me.  I thought it was a fun, pretty dress....but too "pretty" for the Academy Awards.  I'm a huge fan of polka dots, so it was difficult for me to knock this one down.

The dress is actually a ‘Nuit de Feu’ dress in red chiffon silk with a polka dot effect in devoré velvet from Christian Dior Haute Couture Spring-Summer 1954.

Tony Bennett attended the 2012 Oscars with his wife Susan Benedetto who wore a very simple red dress that did not grown on me at all.
