Oscars 2012: Purple, Blue, Green Dresses, who wore them?

L to R: Glenn Close, Sherri Shepherd, Maya Rudolph, Viola Davis wear bold colored dresses at the 84th Academy Awards

During the pre-Oscar show George Kotsiopolis of E!'s Fashion Police, predicted that there would be a lot of color on the red carpet and because of the spring 2012 runway shows so did I. And, although there were a few splashes of color, there wasn't as much as I was expecting.

I would much prefer women take the traditional elegant fashion route anyway. Images taken on the red carpet--especially at the Oscars, will be around for years. This makes it important for women's dresses to be as timeless as possible. Going for bold, bright colors (other than red) usually lends to a more dated look.

At the 2012 Oscars we came across various shades of purple, many blue tones (including aquamarine, eeeek!) and greens.

Which is your favorite out of these colorful looks?

Annie Mumolo, co-writer of "The Bridesmaid," wore a Pamella Roland gown.  I was so thrilled to see Pamella Roland designs back on the red carpet. I feel like it's been a while.

Bérénice Bejo, star of "The Artist", wore a mint-green Elie Saab gown.  was nominated for Best Supporting Actress for her role as Peppy Miller in "The Artist".  The Oscar went to Octavia Spencer for her role of Minny in "The Help".

Glenn Close wore a hunter green Zac Posen gown, Judith Leiber bag, and a pair of Bulgari earrings.  She struck a (righteously) confident pose on the red carpet. She looks beautiful and age appropriate without coming off as dull and matronly.

Glenn Close was nominated for Best Actress for her role in "Albert Nobbs", the Oscar went to Meryl Streep for her role in "The Iron Lady."

Choreographer Laura Gorenstein Miller in a pastel green gown. She attended the 2012 Oscars to support her husband, Chris Miller and his nomination for Best Director for his work in "Puss in Boots."

Does her dress seem a little bit extravagant to you? I see too much material.

Leslie Mann arrives for the 84th Annual Academy Awards® from Hollywood, CA February 26, 2012 in a Roberto Cavalli dress. credit: Heather Ikei / ©A.M.P.A.S.

Leslie Mann wore a "tight" sequin Roberto Cavalli dress,  Lorraine Schwartz jewelry, Brian Atwood shoes   and a satin Judith Leiber clutch. Leslie Mann was the star of "40-Year-Old Virgin."

Maya Rudolph arrives for the 84th Annual Academy Awards® from Hollywood, CA February 26, 2012 in a Johanna Johnson gown. credit: Matt Petit / ©A.M.P.A.S.

Ultra-funny-girl, Maya Rudolph, attended the 2012 Oscars in a plum Johanna Johnson design embellished with crystal cap sleeves and cinched at the waist with a matching silver belt, Neil Lane diamonds and Casadei heels.  I love her in "Up All Night" and of course in SNL!

Missi Pyle arrives for the 84th Annual Academy Awards® from Hollywood, CA February 26, 2012 in a Valentina Delfino gown. credit: Richard Harbaugh / ©A.M.P.A.S.

Missi Pyle, (she played Constance in "The Artist") wore an eco-friendly number.  Her dress was made out of organic silk and recycled polyester gown and was designed by Valentina Delfino, the winner of the third annual Red Carpet Green Dress contest.  She accessorized with Chopard diamonds and a Swarovski roll clutch added sparkle to the design.  This was the sort of aquamarine dress I was speaking of.  Really wish it was designed in a different color.

Penelope Cruz arrives for the 84th Annual Academy Awards® from Hollywood, CA February 26, 2012  in an Armani   Privé gown. credit: Heather Ikei / ©A.M.P.A.S.

Penelope Cruz wore a very feminine off-the-shoulder organza custom-made Armani Prive gown and Chopard jewels made of a whopping 114 carats. Beautiful powdery, pastel purple gown with a little of grey. Just gorgeous.

Sherri Shepherd arrives for the 84th Annual Academy Awards® from Hollywood, CA February 26, 2012 in an electric blue gown.  credit: Heather Ikei / ©A.M.P.A.S.

Sherri Shepherd wore an electrifying blue dress to the 2012 Oscars.  When she first posted an image of herself leaving to the Oscars, the dress didn't look as bad. I love the color on her skin and the embroidery.  I just wish she had found the appropriate bra for the dress, so that her girls wouldn't take the leading role in her ensemble.  You win some, you lose some.

Viola Davis, Oscar®-nominee for Performance by an Actress in a Leading Role, arrives at the 84th Annual Academy Awards® from Hollywood, CA February 26, 2012 in a Vera Wang gown. credit: Matt Petit / ©A.M.P.A.S.

Viola Davis wore a stunning green dress custom-made by Vera Wang, a Judith Leiber clutch, dazzling Lorraine Schwartz diamond-and-emerald jewels and Jimmy Choo sandals. I'd rather a little more conservative top portion of the dress for an event as elegant as the Oscars, but her girls were fitted and positioned perfectly.  The star of her look was nothing other than the dress and herself--the way it should be.

Virginia Madsen arrives for the 84th Annual Academy Awards® from Hollywood, CA February 26, 2012 in a Kevin Hall. credit: Matt Petit / ©A.M.P.A.S.

Virginia Madsen wore a majestic purple dress by Kevin Hall.  It came off as a little prom-dress-y to me, but the more I look at it, the more it gives off a simple, yet elegant vibe.  She looks great for being 50 years old!

John Corbett and Bo Derek arrive for the 84th Annual Academy Awards® from Hollywood, CA February 26, 2012.  credit: Heather Ikei / ©A.M.P.A.S.

Bo Derek looked amazing in her dashing purple gown at the 2012 Oscars. Her dress is by designer Lloyd Klein.
